However, it is widely believed that large wind penetrations would put an increased burden on Independent System Operator (ISO) due to the uncertain nature of wind power. One of the most important future challenges seems to be the management of the integration of fluctuations in the electricity production from wind energy sources. Another important issue regarding the integration of wind generation energy into a power market is to assess the impact of large-scale wind power integration on spot market prices and generator dispatch in a competitive pool. With restructuring of the power industry, competitive bidding for energy and ancillary services are increasingly recognized as an important part of electricity markets. It is desirable to optimize not only the generator’s bid prices for energy and for providing minimized ancillary services but also the transmission congestion costs. The goal in this research is to develop a new model for generation schedule in a multi-area competitive market due to area power unbalance of the Taiwan power system. Because of the integration of the electric energy, transmission and reserve capacity markets simultaneous, the new formulation for solving schedules and marginal prices should lead to better economic efficiency and reduced transactions costs. To deal with the multi-product and multi-area electricity market dispatch problem, a novel stochastic direct search method (SDSM) is developed to dispatch the energy and reserve concurrently and handle units with any kind of bidding price functions. Several important issues of wind capacity integration in the power markets are discussed by using the developed software. The effects of tie-line congestion and area spinning reserve requirement are consistently reflected in the marginal price in each area to provide incentives for market participants to avoid undesirable heavy flows among the three areas. Numerical experiments are included to develop some applicable market rules and to provide valuable information for the deregulation of Taiwan power system in the future.
