However, the supply by the capture fisheries decreases dramatically from time to time since most of the sources are heavily exploited. However, aquaculture appears as an alternative to supply the increasing demand for seafood products. During the last decade, tilapia has become an important trade species as a principal component of subsistence fisheries. Nowadays in America, tilapia production has been increasing slower than Asia. Tilapia production for Americas is distributed around USA, Mexico, Honduras, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Brazil and Colombia as the larger producer, and the rest of the countries appear as small producers. In case of Central America, the countries Honduras and Costa Rica are the largest producers counting with 80% the total production in Central Region while Guatemala counts near to 10%. The aim of this study was to identify the differences between Guatemala and Honduras tilapia industry by using three social business analysis, which are Porter’s Diamond Model, Competitiveness analysis and SWOT analysis to explain the indicator of the different performances of the two countries in the competition of Central America tilapia industry. Honduras was taken as a model since it is the second largest producer in Central America and apparently has the same level of competitiveness as Guatemala. Even though tilapia industry in Guatemala is considered a new industry that starts to grow up. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a value chain where different stakeholders coming from the private and public sector are involved to become the industry competitive such as the Central American countries. Our result show that Guatemalan’s tilapia industry appeared to have a positive view regarding the natural sources, aquaculture structure. Since aquaculture in Guatemala is a young industry. It is weaknesses in the responses was especially for demand conditions, supporting industry, capital invest, management and administration. To try to gain competitive position some factors shall be improve and the deficiencies shall be eliminated to provide Guatemala a broad competition. Therefore to increase the competitive situation of Guatemala tilapia industry, the major challenges are to reduce the production cost and conciliate the economic performance Chyng-Hwa Liou Ya-Ke Hsu 劉擎華 徐雅各 2013 學位論文 ; thesis 59 en_US
