Through explaining historical literatures and analyzing Soong’s changes and different attitudes in different periods of her life, the aim is to find true appearance of figures and their values toward the world. On the other hand, to reconstruct Soong’s life which went across three centuries, musical songs are used. The songs of musical also try to present her struggle for making decision between parents and friends; between country and family; and between indiscriminative love and personal love. Moreover, during the process of analyzing and shaping characters, we reorganize different perspectives of characters’ personalities from ordinary people, playwrights, and actors. At same time, we further characterize Soong May-ling who also has been described by playwrights, and present how she showed her purity and fearlessness to face her difficult time. A brief organization of thesis is given as follows. The thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter 1 is motivation and methodology of research. Chapter 2 reviews related history and literatures. Chapter 3 focuses on Song of Love. The text structure of director rehearsal version of the musical will be explained. The organization of songs in plot analysis is included in this chapter as well. Chapter 4 illustrates internal and external motivations of characters from performers’ points of view. The interaction between Soong and other roles is also described.
