Summary: | 碩士 === 國立清華大學 === 國際專業管理碩士班 === 102 === Tourism contribution has evolved into a contributing factor of an island or a country’s economic development. In Indonesia, tourism revenue has become the fifth largest contributor to its economy. Increased numbers of foreign visitors to Indonesia has become proof of the successful development of Indonesia’s tourism industry.
As the largest archipelago country in the world, Indonesia has a huge potential to develop its tourist areas, especially the small islands that are spread around Indonesia. Several islands have been successfully developed and marketed as popular tourist destinations, but the rest of them are still underdeveloped and not yet recognized as major vacation spots. Raja Ampat is an area in the east part of Indonesia. The marine biodiversity in Raja Ampat has been recognized as one of the richest in the world. Raja Ampat also offers a combination of wildlife tourism potential and its unique culture. In spite of all this potential, Raja Ampat is not yet recognized as a major tourist destination.
A comparison study was done between Raja Ampat and two popular island tourism destinations, Bali Island and Bangka Belitung. Bali Island is known as a world-class tourist destination, while Bangka Belitung is recognized as a popular domestic tourist destination. Comparison study and SWOT analysis results of Raja Ampat showed that Raja Ampat has the potential to become a popular tourist destination. In order to build Raja Ampat as a tourism location, this study had identified and recommended improvement on the following factors: safety, environmental protection and infrastructure development. Raja Ampat tourism development should aim for a long term sustainable tourism industry, and not just focus on short term profit activities that can destroy nature and also its future as an Island tourism destination.
