The quasi-experimental design was adapted in this study. The participants were thirteen new immigrant children from Nan Nan elementary school in Taichung City. Mostly they were fifth or sixth-graders. There were seven students as experimental group, while six students as the control group. The experimental group had attended the 40-minute picture-book group counseling twice a week for seven weeks. Meanwhile, the control group only read the outline of the story which was given by the researcher by themselves. The independent variables consisted of the experimental treatment and the dependent variables consisted of the self-concept. All of the participants were arranged to receive "Children Self-concept Scale" as the pretest, the posttest and the follow-up test.. The data were collected and analyzed with Wilcoxin-Mann-Whitney to assess whether there were significant differences between the experimental group and the control group. Meanwhile, the researcher also examined the effect of the program from the feedback and interview of the group members. The major findings are concluded as follows: 1. The immediate counseling effects: There was a significant difference showed on the “Family Self-concept Sub-Scale” and “Body Self-concept Sub-Scale” at the end of the treatment. However, there was no significant difference showed on the “Children Self-concept Scale,” “School Self-concept Sub-Scale,” “Appearance Self-concept Sub-Scale” and “Emotion Self-concept Sub-Scale” at the end of the treatment. 2. The follow-up counseling effects Even though there was positive effect, there is no significant difference showed on the “Children Self-concept scale” after three weeks of the treatment. 3. The results of supplementary data The members were satisfied with the activities, the guidance of the leader and the picture books during the group counseling program. The member also reported that they had learned and benefited from the program. They gradually knew who they were, and they discovered that they were potential. Moreover, they were satisfied with their performance in the group and the members also have better self images after attending the group. Finally, suggestions for future study and clinical applications based on the results of this study were provided for future researchers and school counselors.
