Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺中教育大學 === 語文教育學系碩博士班 === 102 === Changes in society have brought forth more diversity in the types of families. Grandparents rearing grandchildren is a situation that is increasing year by year; it is becoming a typical family type nowadays. It is also a social issue. This research analyzes the Grandparent-Grandchildren Issue in Chiu Ko's (Jiu Ge) Juvenile & Children’s Literature Award, and investigates the text of the authors' tactics of dealing with subjects of ‘real life’.
The first chapter of this paper begins with the motivation and purpose of the study, followed by the report of the research methods and procedures. The second chapter discusses the basic concept of Juvenile Novels, and the history of the Chiu Ko (Jiu Ge) Juvenile & Children’s Literature Award, also with the literature review, and relationships in the grandparents-rearing family. The third chapter critically examines the images of grandparent and grandchild in the novels. The fourth chapter seeks to uncover how grandparents affect grandchildren’s growth. The fifth chapter discusses the issues of grandparents and grandchildren.
The research reaches some conclusions. In the text, the roles of grandfathers show three types of images: optimistic; perseverant; and withered. The roles of grandmothers show three types of images: kind but tough; always young in heart; and cold. The roles of grandchildren show three types of images: mature; identity needed; and needing family company. Grandparents play roles in passing down, supplying physical needs, and teaching. The issues of grandparent and grandchildren reflect real society, including social phenomena such as the teaching style grandparents use with their grandchildren, the changes in family structure, grandparents' pressure, the change in years of required conpulsory education, living styles, divorce, aborigines moving to the cities, etc.
Finally, this paper integrates the results of each chapter, and makes related suggestions to the juvenile novel’s writer who is interested in grandparent-grandchildren issues.
