Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺中教育大學 === 音樂學系碩士班 === 103 === General education courses were launch in Taiwan universities in 1984 while Ministry of Education announced a regulation regarding implementation of general education in universities. Among general education courses, music related courses provided music learning opportunities for non-music majors in universities. Music courses in general education expected to elevate the motivations of non-music majors to learn music as well as experience various musical styles. The purpose of the study was to explore the change of music preferences of non-music majors in one particular music course in general education.
The music course, Appreciation to Film Music in general education was the case in the study. Researcher collected qualitative data through interviewing the instructor and students, observing and videotaping classes and so on. Quantitative data were collected via pre- and post-tests of music background and preference questionnaires. Moreover, researcher collected and analyzed data through participating group discussions and projects in the semester. The findings of the study were as follows:
1.Music preferences were elevated after participating in Appreciation to Film Music.
2.Non-music majors’ preferences toward diverse musical styles showed differences but not significant after participating in Appreciation to Film Music.
3.Students’ discussions and group projects were utilized to increase learning attitudes and participation.
A well-designed music course in general education brought in current, issues to higher the learning interests of non-music majors in universities. Recommendations were made for designing music courses in general education.
