In this dissertation, two different materials were selected as the substrate. They were (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES, AP) and (Polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride, PDADMAC, PD). The precursor of azobenzene was 2-{[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]diazenyl (Methyl Red, MR). The substrate and precursor were ionic bonded. The formation of ionic bonding could reduce the situation of the phase separation and increase the thermal stability and long term preservation. We also provide a set of optical experiment and inspection, such as NMR and FTIR, for discern the different between the ionic bonding formation and non-ionic bonding one. The diffraction efficiency of the composites MR/AP, MR/PD, MR/AP (hybrid) was 37%, 31%, 0.001%. From the data measurement by Atom Force microscopy (AFM), it was revealed that the amplitude of the surface relief gratings for the crosslinking AP substrate was higher than that for the long-chain PD polymer. On the other hand, the amplitude of the surface relief of MR/AP (hybrid) is much smaller. We also provide a theoretical calculation to identify the refractive index of these materials.
