Due to the rotor for medical use is operated at ultra-high rotational speed, it is not allowed existing shrinkage and mirco-pore during investment casting in order to avoid the formation of creep damage and hazards. Therefore, the mold flow analysis using AnyCasting software was adopted for experiment design and to simulate the pouring, filling, and solidification of casting processing. The formation of shrinkage and the location of defects were also predicted. The numerical analysis result was compared with that actual pouring result to infer the causes of defect formation. The optimization of processing parameters was obtained by designing the pouring position, downsprue layout, cross-sectional shape and size of inlet, pouring time, and pouring temperature. The optimized parameters were feedback to the early phase of product development. Simulation results reveal that well-designed overflow and riser in gating system are effective to remove shrinkage and micro-pore defects from casting components. The results of this study are helpful to prevent the formation of casting defects, to promote the product yield, and to reduce costs and the terms of product research.
