Simultaneously, in order to meet the design safety, shank also need to have high toughness and strength. SCM 415 is a low carbon chrome molybdenum alloy steel which is a popular material used to make shank with the above mentioned features, however SCM 415 material also had sticky and tough features when machined and could cause the chip with a difficult breaker feature. Secondly, high cutting temperature will make the tool with ease welding, heat transform, thermal wear cracking phenomenon, therefore this research is to explore and adopt a proper cutting tool considering cutting condition combination in order to reduce process cost and increase part quality. There are three types of cutting tool used in this study including SCM 415 with hard alloy, CVD coating, cermet, and experiments are carried out on CNC turning machine. In addition to measure and discuss cutting tool wear, chip break status and surface roughness, the optimal cutting condition are also figured out for the shank material (SCM415) which will be further applied in cutting tool industry and academics reference.
