Historically, Taiwan is a multilingual ethnic society. Languages, such as indigenous Formosan languages, Dutch, Spanish, Hakka, Taigi and Japanese have enriched linguistic diversity in Taiwan. During the Japanese period, many Japanese loanwords particularly scientific words were coined for Taiwanese. These loanwords are still used, such as Ischemic Heart Disease (狹心症)、diabetes mellitus (糖尿病) and flu (風邪). Although many medical disease terms have been collected by some medical doctors and scholars, the terms were rarely surveyed from the perspective of morphology and cultural implication. For example, the first Taiwanese medical textbook “Lāi-gōa-kho Khàn-hō͘-ha̍k” which was written in Romanized Taiwanese POJ (Pe̍h-ōe-jī) was published in 1917. Unfortunately, only a few of people knew it. In this paper, some medical specialists were interviewed and linguistic corpora were analyzed. Medical corpora includes “Lāi-gōa-kho Khàn-hō͘-ha̍k” and the health education corpus of Ministry of Health and Welfare. The corpora were analyzed from the perspective of morphological structure and Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. Nowadays, some Taiwanese words were affected or replaced by the Chinese due to Mandarin Chinese education policy. For example, the young Taiwanese men use “hoat-iām (發炎)” instead of “hoat-hông (發癀)”, which was commonly used before. There are more cases, such as “nōa-chhàu (爛臭)”, “lāu-tai (老呆)”, “làu-thò͘-chèng (落吐症)”, “ok-hong-siâ (惡風邪)”. It is expected that the results of this paper will contribute study, standardization and promotion of medical terms in modern Taiwanese. 碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 台灣歷史文化及語言研究所 === 102 === Abstract
Language is not only a tool of communication, but also an important medium which reflects human’s views on the world.
