In addition, the thesis will analyze the implications of ge-shui-huo rituals, such as the meanings of religion, social networking, and cultural spaces, which are displayed by rituals. The effects of such rituals are to reach the balanced status of gods and ghosts/spirits, to satisfy the residents’ yearning of fear and hope to dispel disasters, and they embody the recognition and comprehesion of ge-shui-huo of the residents and neighborhoods, intertwining the social relations and re-organizing the social order of both the visible and invisible worlds. The meaning of cultural spaces behind the rituals will also be discussed. The last part of this thesis focuses on the conclusion of prominent elements of ge-shui-huo. 劉正元 2014 學位論文 ; thesis 121 zh-TW |

碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 台灣歷史文化及語言研究所 === 102 === Abstract
The research topic of this thesis is “The Ritual of Ge-shui-huo and its Sociocultural meaning,” which aims on discussing about Ge-shui-huo, the ubiquitous phenomena in southern Taiwan. Setting the Ritual event of Ge-shui-huo held by Temple Xian-ji at Shang-jia-dong, Houbi, Tainan, in 2009 for example, this thesis aims to explore the meaning of Ge-shui-huo. The Rituals of temples have existed for a long term but they are rarely further analyzed or explored. Ge-shui-huo is also called Ge-shui-shiang, whose main purpose is to gather the army for the gods, and the army is traditionally named the forces of five Camps, Implying soldiers from everywhere. The locale of such ge-shui-huo rituals are often set by the waters, with the specific activities.
The content of this thesis focuses on the case of pilgrimage trip of Temple Xian-ji at Shang-jia-dong, Houbi, Tainan to Shuang-xi-kou, Bei-pu, Bai-he, Tainan in Year Ji-chou (2009), investigating the qing-huo (request of divine force of other temples) as one approach of the ge-shui-huo rituals to identify its ideological symbols and sociocultural meanings. Along with the author’s personal experiences of field studies in attending ge-shui-huo rituals (ge-shui-xiang) held in Kaoshiung, the thesis contends to discover the differences of ge-shui-huo rituals in different areas and distinguish the specific features of the ge-shui-huo case study of Temple Xian-ji at Shang-jia-dong, Houbi, Tainan.
By comparing and analyzing the records of ge-shui-huo rituals, the outline of the thesis will discuss from the procedure of ge-shui-huo along with other common pilgrimage activities to reveal the differences. Furthermore, with the data, this thesis will illustrate the distinctions of ge-shui-huo cases of Temple Xian-ji at Shang-jia-dong, Houbi, Tainan and the ge-shui-xiang (request of gathering the unknown spirits from everywhere) rituals held in Kaoshiung area, aiming to specify the ge-shui-huo ritual at Shang-jia-dong.
