The form and beauty of Chinese character will be presented as design that expresses its visual elegance and content through special design schemes. In Taiwan, the traditional Chinese design uses a great variety of tactics to express its delicacy and sense, revealing the social, cultural, functional, and aesthetical dimensions of the Chinese character. The M.A. thesis collects the relevant literature concerning the Chinese character design and the popular expressions of it. Through semiotic theory, the thesis further interprets, analyzes compares, organizes, and generates the data mentioned above. Along with the data and graphs of the character—such as the design on the architectural décor, the everyday objects, and the print design—the thesis analyzes the shape of its design, categories and status quo of its usage. The expressions of Chinese character design in Taiwan can be divided into the eight methods: (1) graph-embed character, (2) additional and decorative character, (3) graph -composed character, (4) character-composed graph, (5) borrowing strokes, (6) compound character, (7) fit-in character, and (8) compressed character. The thesis explores the traditional design of the Chinese character in Taiwan, and attempts to make a systematic organization that, based on the former categories of the characters, will be further readjusted, re-categorized and redefined. By so doing, the research wishes to discover the features and schemes of the design, extract its wisdom, creativity, and imagination, and then use them in the contemporary design of the Chinese character. The conclusion of the thesis can be made (1) to understand how the traditional design of the Chinese character was transformed into the everyday use; (2) to illustrate the expressions and the categories the character; (3) to highlight the Taiwanese cultural specialty by studying the traditional design; and (4) to provide a reference for the future researcher or designer. 碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 視覺設計學系 === 102 === ABSTRACT
The target of the Chinese character design is the Chinese character.
