It undermines the support of family bonds and thus raises attention regarding the education of children: in particular, their character cultivation during the childhood stage. In both Taiwan and China, Di Zi Gui (Standards for being a Good Pupil and Child) is teaching material more and more prevalently adopted for the character education of preschool children and pupils. This constitutes the motivation of this research to examine whether Di Zi Gui benefits the character education of young children. The experimental method was employed for this study with Di Zi Gui as the teaching material of character education. The experiment was conducted in a kindergarten in Kaohsiung City to explore the effectiveness of the prescribed character education. The survey method was also utilized to investigate the satisfaction level of parents in regard to the effectiveness of their children’s learning in this aspect. In the experiment, 75 preschoolers in Level 2 Classes were teamed up in the Experimental Group, while 91 preschoolers in Level 3 Classes were in the Control Group. As preschoolers are too young to fill out questionnaires to an acceptable extent, their parents and teachers, after an observation of the preschoolers’ behaviors, were requested to fill out the character education effectiveness questionnaires. The pre-test was conducted in August 2013, in which 75 questionnaires were issued to the parents and teachers of the Experimental Group with a return rate of 98.66% and 100%, respectively; 91 copies were issued to the parents and teachers of the Control Group with a return rate of 91.2% and 98.9%, respectively. A total of 332 copies were issued and the total return rate was 96.99%. After a six-month teaching to the Experimental Group and Control Group, i.e. Di Zi Gui experimental teaching for the former and traditional teaching for the latter, the post-test using the same questionnaires as well as a satisfaction survey among the parents were conducted in January 2014, with 322 questionnaires collected in total. SPSS 21 software was utilized for the descriptive statistic analysis, independent-samples t-test, paired-samples t-test and ANOVA. The empirical results are as follows: 1. The scores of the post-test in both groups were significantly higher than those of the pre-test, indicating that both the Di Zi Gui experimental teaching and the traditional teaching benefit the character education of preschoolers. 2. Parents of both groups were satisfied with three dimensions: teaching material, pedagogy and interpersonal relationships of the preschoolers. In particular, the satisfaction level of the Experimental Group was significantly higher than that of the Control Group, indicating that compared with the traditional teaching, the Di Zi Gui experimental teaching received higher satisfaction among the parents regarding the kindergarten’s teaching effectiveness. 3. Suggestions based on the empirical results were proposed.
