Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship among police captains’ transformational leadership, organizational health, and job performance of rank-and-file policemen in Kaohsiung. A questionnaire survey was conducted with rank-and-file policemen from Criminal Investigation Corps, Traffic Police Corps, and Public Safety Corps of Kaohsiung City Police Department 520 questionnaires released in total and 486 responses received. 36 invalid responding excluded, there were 450 effective questionnaires, with an effective recovery rate of 86.5%. The data were then analyzed through using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s product-moment correlation, canonical correlation, and multiple stepwise regression.
Based on the analysis result, the conclusions of the study were drawn as follows:
1. Rank-and-file policemen’s consciousness of their captains’ transformational leadership is positive. “actualization of a vision” and “charisma influence” are among the highest effective.
2. Rank-and-file policemen’s consciousness of organizational health is positive. “Peer-group cohesion” is of the highest recognition.
3. Rank-and-file policemen’s consciousness of job performance is positive. “Work efficiency” is of the highest recognition.
4. Rank-and-file policemen having served the same team for 1 to 3 years and the sergeants from Criminal Investigation Corps in the independent offices have the highest awareness of their captains’ transformational leadership.
5. Rank-and-file policemen having served the same team for 1 to 3 years and the sergeants from Criminal Investigation Corps in the independent offices have the strongest recognition of organizational health.
6. Rank-and-file policemen having served the same team for 1 to 3 years and the sergeants from Criminal Investigation Corps in the independent offices have the highest recognition of their job performance.
7. Rank-and-file policemen who have higher consciousness of their captains’ transformational leadership have stronger recognition of organizational health.
8. Rank-and-file policemen who have higher consciousness of their captains’ transformational leadership have better recognition of their job performance.
9. Rank-and-file policemen who have stronger recognition of organizational health have better recognition of their job performance.
10. Rank-and-file policemen who have higher consciousness of their captains’ transformational leadership and stronger recognition of organizational health have better recognition of their job performance.
11. Rank-and-file policemen’ consciousness of their captains’ transformational leadership and organizational health are highly predictive to overall job performance, among which “peer-group cohesion” is of the best prediction.
Based on the results gained, concrete suggestions were proposed for the reference of the authorities concerned, police personnel, and future studies.
