Leaded brass is recognized as an important base material because of its extensive use in the entire copper industry. Its vast application include water supply systems, electronics, vehicles, ships, airplanes, livelihood products, and defense weapons. However, medical studies have shown that lead severely damages the human hematopoietic and nervous systems, particularly the kidney and other organs of children. With the advancement in science and the progress in living standards, an increasing number of countries have paid more attention to environmental and health issues. Numerous countries have restricted the application of leaded brass alloys. The USA, EU, and Japan have restricted the discharge of lead from brass alloys and lead into drinking water. Therefore, the use of environmental unleaded free-cutting brass materials instead of traditional lead brass has naturally become an important concern. This paper reports on the effect of adding various elements to brass and the design of a series of unleaded brass containing different trace elements using the Taguchi method. The brass materials investigated include Mn, Al, P, Bi, Sn, Ti, and other elements. The contents of alloying elements are adjusted to observe their influence on the free-cutting and dezincification resistance of brass alloys. Cutting, corrosion test, and mechanical property test are conducted to investigate the cutting and corrosion resistance of unleaded brass. Yih-Fong Tzeng 曾義豐 2014 學位論文 ; thesis 95 zh-TW
