This study proposes to explore five main aspects as follows: 1. The understanding of the current circumstance in social support, interpersonal relationships and self-concept among students in hospitality programs. 2. The comparison of social support, interpersonal relationships and self-concept occurs among hospitality students from different backgrounds. 3. The discussion of the correlation among social support, interpersonal relationships and self-concept. 4. The analysis of how to predict students’ self-concept from their data of social support and interpersonal relationships. 5. The outcome of this study can hopefully provide some specific suggestions for school educators, parents and people dedicating in the same field.
In order to explore the five aspects mentioned above, this study was conducted by collecting data from both document analysis and survey method with a questionnaire. A self-complied questionnaire for social support, interpersonal relationships and self-concept is used as the research instrument. The subjects are the students who study in the Food and Beverage Department in vocational high schools of southern Taiwan. 735 copies of the questionnaire are delivered, and effective samples are 469 copies. Next, the data processing is on the analysis of t-Test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson Product-moment Correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis to the conclusion.
The results of this study are as follows: 1. The levels of social support, interpersonal relationships, and self-concept all remain beyond the average. 2. A significant difference is showed between gender, the levels of paternal and maternal education and social support. 3. There is also a significant difference between gender, the levels of paternal education and interpersonal relationships. 4. Social support and interpersonal relationships can be used to predict self-concept effectively.
According to the result of research, the researcher provides several suggestions to students, parents, teachers, and follow-up researches. 1. Put great emphasis on the informative social support. 2. Set up the family relationship in harmony. 3. Build an ideal teacher-student relationship. 4. Take care of students’ interpersonal relationships. 5. Think high of the inspiration and enlightenment given to students.
