An Analysis of Chinese Professional Baseball League Pitcher’s Performance with the Salary : An Application of Different System Data Envelopment Analysis

碩士 === 國立宜蘭大學 === 應用經濟與管理學系應用經濟學碩士班 === 102 === This paper investigates 56 pitchers of Chinese professional baseball and applies different system Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to evaluate the performance and compensation structure with Innings Pitched (IP), Earned Run Average (ERA), Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched (WHIP) records in 2013 and compensation data in 2014. Firstly, we select player’s monthly income in 2013 as one input items and select Innings Pitched (IP), Earned Run Average (ERA), Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched (WHIP) as three output items to evaluate the performance of players. Secondly, we select Innings Pitched (IP), Earned Run Average (ERA), Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched (WHIP) as three input items and select player’s monthly income in 2014 as one output items to evaluate the compensation. The analysis result shows：(i) Pitcher's performance was positively correlated with salary, but it’s not mean the player who performance is efficient will have the efficient salary in the sequential year. Due to industry given players a pretty moldy pay increase in 2014, so most player’s salary is inefficiency. In other words, the reserve clause makes most players have inefficiency compensation. (ii) The three variables of Innings Pitched, Earned Run Average and Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched affect the starting pitchers were great. Especially the most sensitive starting pitcher for innings pitched variables. In other words starting pitcher is most important for the games. (iii) Because of exciting two systems, the inefficiency pitchers of different systems could find an adaptable path for management improving. Based on the System DEA approach, we provide a concept of turnaround situations in the angle of efficiency. That is some inefficiency pitchers might improve efficiencies by turnaround their situations to improve the efficiencies in the future.
