Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立新竹教育大學 === 教育心理與諮商學系碩士班 === 102 === Abstract The study aimed at exploring the experiences of three daughters who interacted with their mothers with major depressive disorder, and the changes of mother-daughter relationships. The purposes of this study were to examine the daughters’ psychological adjustment experiences toward their mothers, to understand mothers’ depression from sociocultural perspectives, and to retrospect the self-reflection as well as awareness of female roles from the roles of daughters. The study used the narrative and holistic-content analysis approach to obtain the following research findings. When three daughters confronted the situation that their mothers were suffering from the depression, they worked through 4 stages, i.e., knowing, struggling, precipitation/ transformation, as well as awareness/action stage. They were caught in the emotional entanglements and felt sympathetic about their mothers’ illness. This emotional feeling was hard to share with others, but it would emerge in many different forms to have impact on the daughters’ lives, and finally evoked the adaptive behavior accordingly. Once the daughters could regulate their experiences in various ways, the emotional entanglements could be relieved. The relationships between daughters and mothers could become close again, and they could face the intertwined relationships with ease. In the early interaction experience with their mothers, the daughters seemed to inherit mothers’ various personalities, or on the contrary, tended to become a totally different person from their mothers. Nevertheless, during the course of treatment and recovery, the role of daughter-mother became reversed, and the relationships became imbalanced and more distant, because the daughters tried hard to take care and worry about their mothers. When the daughters noticed the imbalanced relationships and tried to adjust the interaction with their mothers, they could therefore learn a lesson about how to take care of themselves. The daughters had deep understanding and thoughts on social cultural context due to mother's suffering from depression disorder. Hence the experiences of mothers’ illness helped the daughters’ self-reflection and awareness on the gender role. The implication and suggestions of the research were addressed. Key words: mothers suffering from major depressive disorder, psychological adjustment experience, mother-daughter relationship, sociocultural factors.
