These fairy tales accompany countless children as they grow and affect the soul of mankind. Anderson was the first person to evolve modern fairy tales from classic fairy tales. He was the helmsman to follow the past and herald the future. In his fairy tale creations, he began as a pioneer to draw theme from real-life materials. Andersen had long been associated with poverty, therefore he had always concerned about the subject of the poor. About one third of his fairy tales, the poor are the main characters in the stories. These stories vividly depict the lives of the poor and always raise reader's strong sympathy and deep impression. This study analyzes the subject of poverty in fifty-one of Andersen's works including writing themes, characters and plots. By referencing biographical and diary narrative of Andersen, it also discusses the effects on his creations resulting from his experiences of poverty. This dissertation has a total of six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction includes the research background and motivation, research aims, questions, methods, procedures, scope and limitations, and literature reviews. The second chapter discusses the explanation the creation background and Andersen's concern about the issues of poverty by analyzing his biographical records, fairy tales and his relation to poverty. The third chapter discusses the presentation of the theme of poverty in Andersen's fairy tales by exploring the motivation of the poverty themes, classification of poverty themes and the communicative skills to convey the poverty themes. The fourth chapter is concerned about the characterization of poor roles in Andersen’s fairy tales. The ordinary, anthropomorphic and symbolic images of poverty were respectively explored. The fifth chapter discusses the structure and the writing skills of Hans Christian Andersen on poverty plot design and episode development.
