Because of their own diseases, postoperative recovery states and follow-up treatment, there are more than 90 percent of patients will have the post-operative symptoms of fatigue and poor sleep quality. However, the current concerned issues were limited in pulmonary function and muscular endurance. Fatigue and sleep quality were less discussed and were only investigated in studies of breast cancer morbidities, which limited its universality. Objective: This study investigated the effects of aerobic exercise on fatigue and sleep quality in lung cancer patients receiving lobectomy, and the relationship between fatigue and sleep quality. Methods: This study was a longitudinal and interventional study. A total of five thoracic surgery ward from two medical centers in Taipei were recruited. and randomized them with a random number table to assign the ward to the experimental group (aerobic walking exercise) and control group (general nursing care without aerobic exercise). The total numbers of lobectomy patients were 62. Structured questionnaires including demographics, disease and treatment characteristics, uncertainty, depression, fatigue and resilience were used to collect data. The baseline data was collected on the second day after transfer from Intensive Care Unit to regular ward before the chest tube removal, and then the data on the first, third and sixth month after operation were collected and compared. The data were analyzed by pearson correlation, independent t test and generalized estimating equation. p<0.05 was considered as the statistically significant level. Result: The results showed that aerobic exercise was statistically significant in improving the fatigue severity, fatigue interference and sleep quality. Conclusion: The findings will be the reference for the clinical care and in advance decrease fatigue and promote sleep quality of lung cancer patients receiving surgery.
