They have higher prevalence in Alzheimer’s disease, and onset at a young age. Deterioration of the cognitive function will let the activity of daily life (ADL) worse. Objectives: This study investigated ADL and the dementia conditions in people with DS, and to identify the possible associated factors for dementia conditions and ADL. Method: The study population was obtained from the voluntary registry members of the Republic of China Foundation for Persons with Down syndrome, a total of 758 DS individuals over 15 years of age were surveyed. The structured questionnaire was then mailed to the primary caregivers who were well-suited for providing information, a total of 245 questionnaires were completed by the respondents in the study, resulting in a response rate of 32.3%. This study used a structured questionnaire included demographic data, brief self-reported ageing conditions, Dementia Screening Questionnaire for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (DSQIID) and Barthel index questionnaire were completed by the primary caregivers who were well-suited for providing information on the functioning conditions of the DS individuals. Results: The results showed that 69.4% of the cases were totally independent (BI score 100), and and there were 2.6% of the subjects with DS might have a dementia (DSQIID score≧20). The multiple linear regression analysis revealed that mild (β=3.352) and moderate aging conditions (β=9.282) can significantly predicted the variation in DSQIID score. The full multiple linear regression model found that factors of profound disability level (β=-7.936), multiple disabilities (β=-2.589), and moderate aging conditions (β=-14.376) were significantly predicted the variation in ADL scores after adjusting other factors. Another multiple logistic regression found those case with severe disability level (OR=3.147), profound disability level (OR=16.731), and lower risk for dementia (OR=1.138) were more likely to be functional independence than their counterparts of the respondents with DS, but higher DSQIID score had lower risk. Conclusion: This study provides information of early onset aging conditions and dementia conditions will diminish the ADL functioning in people with DS. Finally, This study suggests that the authority should initiate early intervention programs aim to improve healthy aging and ADL functions for people with DS.
