The concept for hannou-hanx, proposed by Shiomi Naoki, has been most accepted by the people of eastern Taiwan, especially Hualien. Many people who have come to this rural area, are no more than the age of 35. They left the convenience and comfort of their original city life, and embraced the possibility of a better means of life in the countryside. Participating as a staff member in“The research program of rural Hualien with hannou-hanx theory”, I was given the opportunity to have more contact with this group of young immigrants, and during the process of experiencing life in the countryside with them, I became interested in their pursuit in the hannou-hanx way of life. Planning and participating in their events, I began to understand this group of people. Influenced by events occurred during their lives and by different social organizations, they began their quest in the search of self-fulfillment and the hannou-hanx way of life. In an attempt to depict the influence of social organizations (family, school, peers, media, workplace, government ) on these young immigrants, this research utilizes in-depth interview, and the theories of “looking-glass self” and “generalized others”. In particular, this study focuses on the development of self-concept, the interpretation of self, the formation of young immigrants’ socialization and self-concept, and their search of the hannou-hanx way of life!
