In the drilling process, if the drill type is inappropriate or the spindle speed and feed rate are unsuitable will cause the wood fibers not being cut incompletely. Defects such as burr, split and delamination around the entrance surface and exit surface of borehole will appear. In this paper, computer numerically controlled router was used to conduct the drilling investigation of grand fir(Abies grandis), poplar(Populus spp.) and MDF(Medium density fiberboard). Experimental variables are drill type, spindle speed and feed rate, there are 36 combinations. Furthermore, the instantaneous temperatures were measured at the touching and leaving of drill bit the sample. In order to investigate different machining conditions on the quality of these three wood-based materials, defect factors, roughness of borehole wall will be evaluated. The optimum conditions of drill type, spindle speed and feed rate during processing these three wood-based materials were suggested. Reduced defect rate will decrease the cost of labor and time. Experimental results revealed that in the case of machining grand fir, it is recommended to use brad-point drill, the ideal machining conditions were spindle speed 7250 rpm and feed rate 1000 mm/min; twist drill is for processing poplar, the ideal machining conditions were spindle speed 5250 rpm and feed rate 1000 mm/min; brad-point drill is for processing process MDF, the ideal machining conditions were spindle speed 5250 rpm and feed rate 1000 mm/min. To sum up, twist drill, spindle speed 5250 rpm and feed rate 1000 mm/min could get good quality for these three wood-based materials. Wen-Ching Su 蘇文清 學位論文 ; thesis 127 zh-TW
