Coach plays an important role in team sport. The wisdom coaches manifested in leading their teams can promote sport spirit and team performance. However, few studies investigate wisdom manifested by coaches in leading their teams. This study interviewed award-wining coaches for the wisdom they manifested in leading their teams. Twenty-five outstanding coaches who had won Taiwan Sports Elite Awards in 2004 to 2009 and Ministry of Education Coaching Award in 2006 to 2010 received semi-structure interviews for their wisdom and leadership style. These interview transcripts were analyzed and rated for wisdom. The results show that coaches manifested wisdom which corresponded with their conceptions of wisdom. Thirty-five wisdom incidents were categorized to four forms of coaching-related wisdom, and these findings confirm that wisdom is a process which encompasses integration, embodiment, and positive effects for self and others. Furthermore, contingency leadership is found to be leadership style adopted by most coaches. Coaches also led by example, authoritarian leadership, transformative leadership, caring leadership, and visionary leadership.
