Summary: | 碩士 === 國立暨南國際大學 === 輔導與諮商研究所 === 102 === This research is aimed to better understand how people who remain as singles behave and the way they look at their situation in a Chinese-dominated society with much emphasis on family-oriented environment. Marriage is supposed to be very private and taken by many as a personal affair. However in Singapore, the singles are constantly being shroud and bombarded by the government over myriad of concerns for not getting married and giving birth, amidst the nation facing with challenges in rapidly declining birth rate, demographic transition crisis and aging population.
The article began by giving an introduction into the population structure and how each national-wide campaign was promoted and executed to achieve the proportion of the socio-demographic for Singapore. It continued to give an explanation people stayed unmarried mainly due to high volume of office workload, raising rates in food and housing as well as the cry for not finding suitable partner, such are the circumstances commonly cited. Although remain unmarried may arise from various reasons, the singles have to endure pressures from the society, greater environment and individual. Last but not least, the article also talked about how singles face the problem they have encountered and adjust themselves to the best they could to meet the requirement of the society.
Four unmarried people ranging from the age of 43 to 48 had been interviewed, to better understand their current position and how they handle their single life. The research found that these interviewees are positive and having high self-consciousness over their surrounded environment. They are able to manage their time with greater flexibility, engaged themselves in all kinds of social/community activities and are likely to enjoy satisfaction in their work from which they found self-assurance and value in life. At times, social stigma and the negative comments overwhelmed but they are fast to adjust mentally and quick in adapting themselves. While remaining single, they are still hopeful and eagerly awaiting arrival of their soul-mate one day.
Based on the outcome of this research, the researcher gave a recommendation as reference basis to those singles and unmarried who are interested in exploring the topic.
