According to the principle of democratic politics, the fair election is necessary. In order to win an election and acquire the legitimacy, a political party needs to gain majority support. Considering that university is the cradle of intellectuals and that college students are the backbone of the state and society in the future. Studying the party identification of Taiwanese college students contributes to realize the development of party politics.
This study explores the empirical data collected in 2012, and aims to discover the formation of the party identification of the freshmen at pre-civil stage. In addition, this thesis also studies which political attitudes will be influenced by party identification. Regarding of statistical methods, this thesis takes structural equation modeling (SEM) and designs three major models of party identification: “with or without party identification”, “pan-blue identification or not” and “pan-green identification or not”.
Ten factors from previous literatures are examined. On the formation of party identification, the factors of Taiwanese college students' party identification include: media participation, political interest, family politicized, discussing public affairs in college and degree of media exposure.
On the influence of party identification, the factors include: unification and independence issue, political efficacy, political trust, evaluation of the current democracy and prospect of future democracy.
This thesis demonstrates that political interest is the main factor influencing on how Taiwanese college students' party identification form. And Taiwanese college students’ party identification will impart political trust more than the others.
