Although sleep deprivation can induce cognitive impairment and increase the risk of chronic illnesses, the effect of sleep deprivation on organ damage is still unclear. The aims of this study were to establish a model of sleep deprivation and to investigate organ damages induced in the model. In this study, mice were submitted to 0, 24, 48 and 72 h sleep deprivation induced by a modified multiple platform method. Blood and organ samples were collected. Organ damages were evaluated by biochemical analysis and histological examination. Malondialdehyde, nitrite, and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 levels were measured. Sleep deprivation induced heart and liver damages in a deprived time dependent manner. Cytokine and nitrite expression were changed in serum, liver, heart, lung and spleen.
