There are several advantages for masonry wall repaired with wire mesh, such as short erection duration, good stiffness, low-cost, ect. For this reason, wire mesh currently used in retrofit of masonry walls of historical buildings are very often in Taiwan. However, the detail structure behavior and design calculation are still not completely investigated. The study carried out the experiment of six post damaged masonry walls retrofited by wire mesh under the controlled in plane loading. Based upon the test results, the retrofited wall behavior and the failure modes are deeply discussed and compared in this thesis.
1. The specimen without confined boundaries is easy to occur produce flexural failure. However, the specimen with confined boundaries will perform a better structure behavior and higher resistancy under the action of horizonal load.
2. The specimen with more number of openings, the resistant capability of horizontal load will be lower, even the total opening area is the same. The main reason is the wall width between opening edge and the boundary will be reduce.
3. The specimen retrofitted with wire mesh provides better ductility under repeated loading.
4. According to the test for a specimen with opening and boundaries, the linit loading is higher than crack loading. The main reason is the specimen still have some capability to resisit shear force, even the specimen have generated horizontal flexural crack previously in the upper and lower edge.
5. Due to the comparision, the resistant calculation for a masonry wall using the available method is near to the crack load obtaineds in the test.
