Summary: | 碩士 === 國立成功大學 === 地球科學系碩士在職專班 === 102 === Due to the density of population in southwestern Taiwan, and the frequently occurred earthquakes these days, we know that there will be casualties when a disastrous earthquake hits. As a result, I conducted a thorough examination of the relevant literature, and use TELES as a tool to simulate the Houjiali fault in Tainan city. Although the Houjiali fault is the second-type fault, and there is no earthquake happened there so far, however, the uplift rate near the fault is 15 mm/yr. It shows that there may be energy cumulated around the fault. In addition, the fault is located in one of the most populous areas of Tainan: Yongkang district and East district, there will be serious damage and harm when a disastrous earthquake occurs.
By performing simulation on TELES system, we conclude that, should earthquakes occur on Houjiali Fault, casualties would concentrate on Districts of Tainan City, including Yongkang, Dong, Nan, Bei, Aninan, Zhongxyi, and Rende, while building damages would cluster around Yongkang, Dong, Nan, Zhongxyi, Bei, Rende, Aninan Districts. Since these districts are densely populated and are located in more destructive hanging wall, we conclude that earthquakes will cause massive damage and casualties. Judging from further simulation results for fire events after earthquake, we think Tainan City has severely limited resources, regardless of firefighting teams, manpower, or fire engines. Also, in view of the numerous people trapped, specialized rescue teams are nowhere sufficient to deal with earthquake events. In all, by TELES system invented by NCREE, one can estimate the probable degree of devastation caused by earthquakes in Tainan City area, so as to strengthen first response mechanisms. The research results can also provide valuable insights for replenishing the deficient resources for firefighting and disaster relief.
