PDT involves the activation of a photosensitizer by light in the presence of an oxygen-rich environment. Recently, transition metal complexes showing anticancer activity have been extensively used in photodynamic treatment. In this thesis, a series of copper(II) complexes [LnCu(dppn)](ClO4)] (1 - 8) (n = 1 (R = 3,5-tert-Butylbenzene); 2 (R = t-butyl); 3 (R = 3-OMe); 4 (R = 4-OMe); 5 (R = 5-OMe); 6 (R = H); 7 (R = 4-NEt2); 8 (R = 5-NO2) ) with SNO-tridentate Schiff base ligands (L1 - L8) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, UV-Vis, FT-IR, EPR and LC/MS spectroscopic methods as well as X-ray crystal structural studies. Their activity and mechanism for photo-induced cleavage of supercoiled DNA and photocytotoxicity are investigated under UVA (365 nm) and blue light (430 nm) condition. Under UVA light (365 nm) and blue light (430 nm) condition. Furthermore, cellular experiments reveal that complexes (1 - 8) bear high photo-induced cytotoxicity in HeLa and SCC15 cancer cells.
