The Impact of the Cooperation between the Members in the Countervailing Alliances on the Competition in the Inter-Alliance and Intra-Alliance

碩士 === 國立中興大學 === 企業管理學系 === 102 === In this quick-changing environment, a firm can`t operate all the mechanism by themselves. Therefore, cooperating and forming alliances with someone who has complementary resources or capabilities become one of the most recent trends. To get some special and rare resources and capabilities, cooperating with the competitors become more popular, and it`s so called the “co-opetition”. Our study choose two major countervailing shipping alliance that include six shipping firms. We use Cyber Shipping Guide database to collect shipping firm’s news from 2003 to 2010 and classify the actions of the global container shipping companies into 24 different categories. Finally, we have collected 4,136 news for analysis, and 192 for the research samples. The empirical finding shows: (1) When focal firm cooperating with the members of countervailing alliance, it will reduce the Inter-Alliance competition ; (2) when focal firm cooperating with the members of countervailing alliance, it will increase the Intra-Alliance competition and (3) both Inter-Alliance and Intra-Alliance competition will decrease the focal firm`s performance. In summary, our study completing the gap of previous search of strategic alliance by examining how the firm-level behavior will influence the alliance-level behavior.
