The Factors of Social Participation among Elders in Hsinchu County

碩士 === 明新科技大學 === 管理研究所 === 102 === The population of the elder in the whole world, both developed and developing countries, is increasing, Taiwan included. This research aims at discussing the factors that influence the healthy and non-disabled elder that over 65-years-old in Hsinchu County to take part in social affairs. This research collects and analyzes a secondary data. The data is based on the 「Survey on Living Conditions and Welfare Demand of the Elder in Hsinchu County in 2011」, and employs crosstabulation (Chi-square test) and logistic regression analysis to discuss the relation among social demography variables, economic status, social support, perceived health and social participation. The result shows that under controlling other variables, male is more active than female in social participation (odds ratio = 1.396). The elderly people who have reserved property for themselves are more likely to participate in social activities than their counterparts (odds ratio=2.037). The social participation rate rises with the marriage satisfaction. The elders with better self-perceived health condition are more active in social participation. The social participation rates of those who are common and excellent in health condition are higher than those who are not (odds ratio = 1.713 & 2.452). The result shows that the elderly people go to the social activities usually by walking or taken by their families. This research suggests that government should promote the convenience and accessibility of transportation for social participation, and properly assist the elder who are weak in economic condition to increase their aspiration in social participation. Relatives and friends of the elder should encourage, assist and accompany them to take part in social activities.
