碩士 === 美和科技大學 === 健康照護研究所 === 102 === Abstract
Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease. Involvement of certain peripheral nerves is a common complication, leading to sensory, motor and autonomic impairments affecting the eyes, hands and feet. The quality of life (QOL) of people affected by leprosy (PAL) are greatly affected by the disabilities.
Objectives. To purpose of this research was: to describe the characteristics of leprosy patients in Kien Giang province of Vietnam; to describe the self – care abilities for leprosy patients; to explore the relationship between the characteristics and self – care abilities of leprosy patients in Kien Giang province of Vietnam.
Methods. The study used a cross – sectional, descriptive design with convenience sample of 140 leprosy patients treating at Kien Giang province in Vietnam. The data was collected by self – assessment report using as an instrument the questionnaire, which was developed by the Barthel index and translated by the Vietnamese expert. The instrument contained questions regarding 10 items of leprosy patient via activities of daily living. The internal consistency and validity of the instrument had been established previously. The analysis of data was performed using the SPSS 17.0 statistic, descriptive statistics, correlation coefficients, independent sample t-test, and one way ANOVA were used.
Results. Average age of leprosy patients was 58.88(±16.61) from 12 to 93 years; 80.7 % was male holders; 66.4% was Kinh of Ethnic; 91.4% was Buddhist religion; 62.1% was farmer holders,10.7% was unemployed and less percent for officer holders as 6.4%; illiterate, primary school, and high school &; above were taken 20.7%, 60%, and 19.3% of education levels respectively; 79.3% got income ≤1.000.000VND/month (50USD), 8.6% got 100USD/month, and only 4.2% got more than 150USD/month; 78.6% was MB, 21.4% was PB; 100% was care for the disabilities after observation; 83.6% was level 2 of WHO; 56.4% of patients known duration of disease above 14 years; 50.7% had above 2 location of disable; 24.3% was feet; 23.6% was hands; 1.4% was eyes.
Each activity of daily living was described for performed ability of leprosy patient. Sum the patient’s score for the 10 items of activities, in which possible scores range less than 10 was 3.6% for severe disability; from 10-14 was 10.7% for moderate disability and 15 above is 85.7% for mild disability. Mean score for 10 items of performed was 17.26(±3.03).
There were significant differences in the self – care ability of leprosy patients and the demographic characteristic in the relationships for religious beliefs with (p<0.000, F=13.33); and employment with (p<0.01, F=7.43)
The difference was significant p<0.05 of the relationship between age and self – care abilities in which correlation as negative of 0.19 value.
Furthermore, the relationships between leprosy disability situations and self –care abilities of PALs were explored for significant differences on type of leprosy with (p<0.000, F=19.65) and disable location (p<0.000, F=9.09).
Conclusion. The study adds to describe the current situation of leprosy patients in Vietnam. Overall, leprosy patients need to be helped through proper nursing at Kien Giang Province. The data of this study can serve to promote an expectation of a higher level of self – care ability of leprosy patients in order to increase fully independent.
