Summary: | 碩士 === 明道大學 === 國學研究所 === 102 === The evolution of Taiwan Seal Carving can be traced back to Qing dynasty, pioneered by early immigrants from Mainland China, and was carried forward by those seal artists settled down in Taiwan. The inheritance is all based on the epigraphy and the principle of seal craving. From the beginning, this study analyzes the morphology of seal from the Warring States period to Qing dynasty, based on the theory of Seal. Then, the article goes on to classify each of unique seal craving styles that rose during Ming and Qing dynasties. The continued discussion of seal carving evolution after Republic of China established focuses on whether Chinese traditional seal carving styles were influenced by intruder’s culture while under Japanese Occupation; in this part, the article also discusses how modern seal craving artists polished their skills and certain new conceptions derivatized from tradition.
Then, the author critics certain existing seal craving related activities, including clubs, education institutes, awards, publishers and websites. Particularly, the publishing of professional forums, columnists, journals have absolutely enhanced the Art of Seal Carving research and prevalence in Taiwan. Besides, setting foundations of the seal carving awards have also accelerated the rise of new talents, which is critical to succeed skill and culture.
After introducing the development background, author then individually presents the characteristics among the first three generations of Taiwan seal carving artist; neat or messy, succeed the spirit from calligraphy or sculpture, each unique styles could be classified accordingly even in a tiny craft.
To sum up, the author sorts out the references about current evolution of Taiwan seal carving, and makes it a mirror reflecting the advantages and the drawbacks, so that would help to arrange the way inheriting the past and forging ahead into the future.
