Illegal and unethical problems in the construction industry are matters that concern our lives and safety. Among all the illegal and unethical problems in the industry, the mostly criticized is bribery. However, there is a limited number of research discussing the problem of unethical behaviors in the construction industry. How to promote ethical behaviors in the construction industry is a research-worthy topic.
Seeing this, this study is conducted using practitioners in Taiwan’s construction industry as samples. Totally 172 valid questionnaires were returned and then analyzed using methods of descriptive statistics, cross analysis, variance analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to explore the connections among organizational ethical climate, moral values and ethical behaviors in the construction industry. The major analysis results are as follows:
一、 According to the cross analysis results of the samples’ ethical behaviors and positions, nearly 20% to 30% of the samples intend to have unethical behaviors (bribery). In addition, non-technicians have higher intentions of bribery than technicians. This finding is worthy of further exploration.
二、 According to the variance analysis results, the organizational ethical climate in design/consulting departments is better than that in construction departments. In addition, technicians have better moral values and higher ethical behavior inclination than non-technicians.
三、 According to the Pearson correlation analysis results, the organizational ethical climate and moral values of the samples are significantly and closely correlated with their ethical behaviors.
四、 According to the regress analysis results, the two variables of “organizational ethical climate” and “moral values” have an adjusted explanatory power (Adj-R2) of 0.212, meaning they can explain 21.2% of the variances in the samples’ ethical behaviors. Among them, the factor of “moral values” has a stronger influence on the samples’ ethical behaviors and can explain 18.9% of the variances in their ethical behaviors. Therefore, it is suggested that more attention should be invested in improving the moral values of practitioners in the construction industries so as to improve their ethical behaviors.
