According to Department of Health and Children''s Oral Health Survey in Taiwan, caries prevalence increased with the growing age of children and the rate of dental caries of 5-year-old children is up to 79.3%. The problem of dental caries of children has not been improved with the growing of living standard and improved medical care. It is necessary to understand the factors associated with caries of school-age children. Our aim is to explore the factors related to dental caries in elementary school students in Xiaogang district. Method: We used a cross-sectional design. Totally 546 samples were collected from a purposive sampling. Data of caries of children were from the dental examination in school, and the influencing factors were collected from a structure self-administered questionnaire. Finally, the influenced factors of caries were analyzed by the regression models . Results: The status of caries of 9 to 12-year-old students in elementary school, the dft index are respectively indicated as follows: 3.05、2.63、0.77、0.19;the DMFT index are respectively indicated as follows: 0.73、1.53、1.83、2.25。The prevalence of baby teeth caries is: 69.4%、64.3、22.0%、9.1%。The prevalence of permanent teeth caries is: 28.2%、47.8%、40.2、46.2%。After controlling for confounding factors, significant factors affect children’s caries are not brushing teeth after eating sweets (aOR=7.89,95%CI=1.38-35.04), sweets intake frequency 2 to 3 times a week (aOR = 5.78,95%CI=2.19-15.29) and more than four times a week (aOR = 6.77,95/%CI=1.47-31.21), the frequency of intake of sugary drink 2 to 3 times a week (aOR=4.18,95%CI=1.48-11.83) and more than 4 times a week(aOR=4.69,95%CI=1.59-13.83) ,avoiding dental visit (aOR=8.62,95%CI=1.04-41.31), no regular dental check-ups(aOR=6.68,95%CI=1.60-27.84)and over one year (aOR= 5.06,95%CI=1.23-20.87). Conclusion: The results suggest that the school should provide students appropriate oral health education to teach them cleaning teeth after eating, reduce the frequency of intake of sweets and inform the importance of regular dental visits.
