The difficulty of the surgery involves possibility of sinus membrane damage or sinus perforation. A sinus lifting device can help to prevent the defects and elevate the sinus membrane to add graft material in place. This research develops a general sinus lifting instrument which is suitable for implant surgery. The development procedure includes design, manufacture and test. This research consists of three parts. Part I is the parametric design of the instrument, mainly, a clutch mechanism. The engineering drawings and 3D drawings are completed by using a CAD software, SolidWorks. Part II is the GM codes editing of the engineering drawings. A Swiss-type lathe, Star SR-20, is then used to produce the mechanical parts. Part III is the assembly and test of the sinus lifting instrument. The tests are done in two stages. At the first stage, an egg is used for testing. It is found that the sinus lifting instrument can penetrate the eggshell without damaging the egg membrane. At the second stage of the test, artificial bone by SAWBONE is used. It is found that the sinus lifting instrument can penetrate the artificial bone without damaging the skin film.
