It has been sincere believed for twenty years since 1994. The content of Confucius Lottery Poetry is mainly composed of Confucius' concept and opinion. This unique style of lottery poetry does not predict that your luck is good or bad. Its major purpose is to encourage and to inspire people.
This thesis is focused on the study of Confucius Lottery Poetry of Wenwu temple at Sun Moon Lake. It is organized as follows: in the first chapter, we describe our motivation and discuss related research literatures. Then we talk about the history and architectural style of Wenwu temple, and introduce the Civil God, the Martial God and the Establishing God in the second chapter. After that, in chapter three and chapter four, we find out the origin of seventy two lottery poetry from the classical Confucian texts: the Analects of Confucius (Lunyu), the Book of Mencius (Mengzi), the Great Learning (Daxue) and the Doctrine of the Mean (Zhongyong). Besides, this thesis presents the new interpretation of Confucius Lottery Poetry based on Zhu Xi’s Four Books Commentary and the Thirteen Confucian Classics.
Lottery poetry has several-century-long history and deeply affects people’s lives. Although the type and style changes from time to time, lottery poetry consistently plays an important role in transmitting God’s will. Confucius’ thought is rich, extensive and profound; Confucius Lottery Poetry is filled with words of wisdom and knowledge. Today, after two thousand and five hundred years, it always admonishes us against complacence and continues guiding us like a beacon of our hearts.
