Summary:碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 宗教學系碩士在職專班 === 102 === Abstract Similarities between the Gospel according to Luke and the Analects With a view to inculturation in the local context, this thesis looks at the similarities between Jesus’ spiritual teachings and the thought of the Chinese sage, Confucius. It addresses the fundamental question as to whether there can be anything in common between the thought of the God-Man Jesus and Confucius. If there is indeed any similarity in what way is the spirit of Jesus like that of Confucius. The author hopes that this research will help Chinese people to practice a moral life that is more transcendentally joyful. The introduction sets out the motive and purpose of the research as well as the methods used and the scope of the research. The questions to be discussed are set forth along with the overall framework of the thesis. Taking account of history and previous writings, the thesis then proceeds in six chapters: 1. The origin and background of Luke’s Gospel and of the Analects 2. A comparison of spiritual poverty and spirituality in Luke and the Analects 3. A comparison of benevolence/love and forgiveness in Luke and the Analects 4. The contemporary significance of Jesus and Confucius 5. Social service based on love and benevolence 6. Conclusion and limits of the research In conclusion, I affirm the common ground of Jesus and Confucius teachings, especially on the level of love/benevolence and morality, and how both emphasize the dignity of human beings. The Chinese have long suffered from a lack of confidence and a loss of their cultural roots due to the unequal treaties negotiated during the Qing Dynasty. The results of this were felt up until the Communist revolution. The inability to find other spiritual substitutes has led to chaos in modern society, exemplified by conduct such as killing parents, incest, drug use and abuse. From this thesis we can see that is the essence of the Gospel and the heart of the New Testament. Love implies loving our neighbors as ourselves, as Confucius said,: “Do not impose on others what you would not want imposed on yourself.” In the second half of the thesis, it is shown how Jesus’ love can be developed into social service. Examples are drawn from the work of the Good Shepherd Sisters in Taiwan and the Missionaries of Charity in India. The conclusion of the thesis argues that the introduction of the thought of Jesus Christ along with the emphasis on moral formation and education of ancient Chinese philosophy as exemplified in the Analects into Chinese education for life will help people to live a happier life and lead to a reduction of social problems.
