Summary: | 碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 應用美術學系碩士班 === 102 === Among contemporary art and entertainment culture, there are many opportunities to see different creatures or non-living things that blend into hybrid creatures. Though the characters have diverse appearances, many current hybrid creatures design, they lack of inner qualities. Thus, it is imperative to lead hybrid creatures design to a next level- to provide depth and give inner lives to them, and make it a reference for future design.
There are two purposes in this research: First, to discuss the origin and cultural background of hybrid creatures, and analyze the meaning and development process of hybrid creature based on art history. The second is to sort out the symbol of creatures and analyze the connotations of hybrid creatures in order to induce ways of combination and design. In addition, apply those techniques into the design of wildlife and endangered species in Taiwan. After documentary analysis, the research gives out five design stages for hybrid creatures, while including two contemporary artists who used symbolism to design illustrated hybrid creatures after the 1960s as case studies.
This research finding is applied to the design of “Fantastic Paper Ark”, which presents 12 pieces of characters related to Taiwanese wildlife and environmental protection. To add extra value on those characters, they can be applied to posters, stamps or other relevant environmental protection products by different medium. Hybrid creatures have various meanings under different times and places. With the progress of time, the role of hybrid creatures have become more vital. Hybrid creatures represent one’s social background, cultural implication and spiritual world. It is hoped that the research can be a reference for future designer and researcher, and when it comes to hybrid creatures, they could not only focus on the visual aspect, but give extra attention to their inside qualities, to make hybrid creatures more meaningful.
