The reactions mainly contain aluminum acetate monohydroxide and phosphoric acid with oleylamine and oleylalcohol as the surfactants. The reaction parameters such as temperature and the amount of reactants including the aluminum salts, phosphoric acid, and water are detected fro their effects on the size and shape of resulting nanoparticles. The results show the oleylamine is crucial for obtaining monodisperse nanoparticle with polyhedral shape. Without the presence of oleylamine, particle with irregular shapes and polydispersed distribution are obtained. The addition of small amount of water is effective to obtain the larger particle as product due to the increase the size of micelles. The increase of concentration of aluminum salt, which results in the increase of ionic strength of solution in the micelles, decreases the particle size of products due to the decreased size of micelles from the reduction of repulsion between the surfactants. Nanoparticles with a tetrahedral shape can be obtained at higher concentration phosphoric acids, and they can further grow to a tetrapod shape on the increase of the amount of oleylamine in the system. This method can be extended to synthesize other metal phosphate nanoparticle such as GaPO4, CePO4, and BiPO4.
