Learning the use of multi-disciplinary knowledge to develop cross-discipline applications has become one of popular interdisciplinary research areas. In this research, we use information technology to provide effective assistance in the application of building maintenance. The processes of disassembling and reassembling building elements are quite complex and require professional skills. We hope to optimize the disassembling and reassembling processes by utilizing Building Information Model, ontology and 3D modeling techniques, contributing to the maintenance, repair and reconstruction of buildings. Based on the life cycle of a building, this paper proposes a process to work with building information model and establish building structure ontology, maintenance ontology, and reconstruction ontology. We used the main house of a traditional Taiwanese three-section compound as a case study. The 3D models were created from the digital data of building where every architectural element was tagged. Assisted by ontologies and 3D models, we can more clearly express geometric, spatial and geographic information that relate to the maintenance of the building. We proposed a space-based extendable ontology for different structures of buildings to allow the addition of building elements. In addition to providing useful information for building maintenance, we hope to improve the preservation, maintenance, education and inheritance of historical monuments in the future by preserving and using their digital data in our system to make the development of cultural heritage preservation sustainable.
