Due to technological and economic development, people's living standard rises continuously. As the basic living conditions are met, people's requirement for the quality, health and comfort of living environment has grown. A person lives indoors for about 90% of one’s life. In order to let the users feel the comfort of indoor space, besides adequate light, the artificial indoor illumination should let the users exercise indoors with physiological and psychological comfort. This study takes the common indirect lighting and direct lighting environments in Taiwan as target, and uses psychophysical technique to compare their visual brightness, in order to determine the lighting form which can build higher brightness. Considering both of life quality and lighting energy saving, this study discusses the types of lighting design that can maintain life quality and reduce the energy consumption.
This study uses three kinds of indirect lighting and three kinds of direct lighting to compare the brightness. The scale models of various lighting environments are made, and the scale models are converted into image files. The constancy of psychophysics is used for the images to test the subjects.
The conclusions of this study are described below:
1. The indirect lighting is regarded by most subjects as brighter lighting form.
2. It is rational to use L value to substitute luminance.
3. Vertical illumination and average illumination have influence on brightness.
4. Indoor wall surface and floor are the main parts that influence spatial brightness.
