Summary: | 碩士 === 中國醫藥大學 === 公共衛生學系碩士班 === 102 === There are two medical systems in Taiwan; one is Western medicine and the other is traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). TCM has been widely practiced and is gradually integrated into Taiwan'' s national health care system. People in Taiwan often use both Western and traditional Chinese medicine to take care of their illnesses and Taiwan'' s National Health Insurance covers almost 30 percent of health expenditure of TCM. Therefore, it is of importance to understand the TCM'' s practice for common diseases. In this study we take shoulder pains as an example to demonstrate how TCM'' s acupuncture and traumatological manipulation methods in TCM work.
In this study we presented two cases. Case one was a 53-year-old woman who complained about pains on left shoulder after her one-week trip. After asking about her medical history, conducting physical examination and image scans on her left shoulder, for releasing her shoulder pains, we used acupuncture and TCM traumatoligical manipulation methods simultaneously first, and then used acupuncture on her shoulder A-shi (non-fixed acupoints), on two Yang-ling-quan (GB34) acupoints on legs, and gave her some TCM decoctions. Case two was a 54-year-old man who complained the same syndrome appeared while he was working. Similarly, we applied TCM traumatological manipulation methods on releasing his shoulder pains, and then used acupuncture on his shoulder A-shi and two Yang-ling-quan acupoints. In these two cases, the treatment goals were to smooth the fascia, muscle, and let the bone relocation. Both patients showed a good final outcome, which is no complication appeared after the follow-up treatment. Shoulder pain is a common illness and its severity can lead to patients unable to do many activities, not just with uncomfortable feelings. Although Western medicine in treatment of shoulder pain is well-known, there are still few methods to cure it. In this study, using acupuncture and traumatological manipulation methods of TCM were considered as a way that can not only reduce the pain but also last the comfort longer while the methods of Western medicine were used. In sum, TCM was demonstrated as a part of integrated medicine which is effective on treating patients'' shoulder pains.
