Description
Summary:碩士 === 長榮大學 === 翻譯學系碩士班 === 102 === Elimination of errors in public sign translation is an ever important task in building Tainan into an international city with English friendly environment. However, studies of public sign translation has long tended to focus on individual cases, and there has been a lack of a systematic classification and analysis of pragmatic errors in translation. Using bilingual signs in Tainan’s public transportation system as the research material, this study classified and analyzed translation errors from the point of view of pragmatics to establish possible causes of the translation errors. In light of Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies, this study also analyzed the correlations between politeness strategies in the translation of public signs and the perceived degrees of politeness by English-speaking readers. The results of this study show translation errors correlate with a number of factors such as the differences between Chinese and English in word selection and stylistic conventions and the translation competence of the translator. And the correlation between politeness strategies and perceived degrees of politeness is positive. Based on the results of this study, suggestions are made on how to use politeness strategies to translate public signs. It is hoped that the study may make contribution to improving translation quality of public signs and the teaching and practice of public signs translation.
