Expecting through this study to understand the students' reading motivation, reading attitude, reading habits and how to choose extracurricular children reading materials. Knowing whether it is variable because of gender, grade ,resident area and other backgrounds. This study adopted questionnaires on downtown, uptown, mountain area and seaside four areas totally 600 middle-high grade elementary students in Taichung city. Analyzed with SPSS statistical analysis software, Independent- Samples t-Test, one-way ANOVA and Multiple Response Crosstabs analysis. By analyzing the data, we can deeply understand the real factors that affect students' reading ability, and providing recommendations to schools, teachers, parents, students and education authorities. Hoping to help children establishing good reading habits from an very early age, let them enjoy in reading, improve reading ability and finally they can "live to old to learn." This research has showed important results as followings: First, Taichung city elementary school middle-high grade students have good reading motivation, and there still has inspiring space; different grade students reading motivation are significantly different. Second, Taichung city elementary school middle-high grade students’ reading attitude is acceptable and need to be improved; but different gender and grade students’ reading attitude has significant differences. Third, the elementary school middle-high grade students in Taichung city spend 1~2 hours to read three or four books. Home, the library (room) and classroom are their main reading spaces; different grade students are significantly different in reading habits. Fourth, the elementary school middle-high grade students in Taichung city have more interesting for choosing story books, picture books and recreational extracurricular children reading materials books.
