Community of practice is a practical way of implementing knowledge management. The object of this study is the Life Education Workshop in Chia-Yi which is a growth group formed by teachers. The goals of this research are to explore the approaches of Community of Practice by understanding the motivations for those who attend the meetings and the factors of mutual engagement of the community members’ participation. Data collection methods included semi-structured interviews and a qualitative research method was employed.
The conclusions of the study are as following: 1) Life Education Workshop meets the approaches of the Community of Practice, which are knowledge domain, community and practice. 2) The motivation of participation is based on the agreement of the common values and the anticipation the solving teaching issues. 3) Learning motivation comes from the self-reflections of teaching in class and the mutual assistances. 4) Social network is the factor of mutual engagement. 5) The factor of mutual engagement is due to the result of practical empowerment after interaction with the members. 6) The factor of mutual engagement is due to the identification toward the Life Education Workshop.
Suggestions from this study to the Life Education Workshop are the followings: 1) Life Education Workshop can be more diverse and non-religious, therefore, the focused field and the joining members can be more varied. 2) Reinforcing leaders’ functions can motivate the acts of the community and the working atmosphere. For follow-up study: 1) Studying multiple cases with different mutual engagement modes of the Community of Practice. 2) Study the relationships of three dimensions of Community of Practice. 3) with collaborative researchers to interpret messages by different points of view.
