碩士 === 真理大學 === 企業管理學系碩士班 === 102 === This study investigates the impact of firm heterogeneous on the decision for export and foreign direct investment (FDI). Using a dataset of 621 manufacturing firms listed in the Taiwan Stock Exchange over the period 2000-2005. Employing the multinomial logit model, we find that firms with higher productivity have a higher probability to entry in international markets. The result shows that productivity is the major determinant of the FDI decision for Taiwanese manufacturing firms. This study further separates samples into electronics and non-electronics firms to examine whether the productivity effect of trade modes differs across industries. The coefficients for productivity are still positive and statistically significant at the 1% statistical level on the FDI decision for electronics and non-electronics firms. However, firm productivity has no significant impact of the export decision for electronics firms.
