A Study on Layout of Literary Supplements and Readers’ Preferences

Layouts are affected by the editorial policy, right, course and the times’ background that produce newspapers’ styles. The entire printed pages of literary supplements have layout’s established rules, but they are not alike because of various contents. This study takes literature discussion to arrange and generalize the visual elements and structure, and applies these to analyzing sample pictures that understands the differences of layouts between every supplement. Through expert interviews, we can comprehend the layout’s process, settings, and affected factors; then it also uses questionnaire survey to explore readers'' feelings and preferences of layouts. The results show: 1. The basic layout’s elements of literary supplements are dateline, headline, copy, image, illustration, caption and frame. And the structures are variations of columns, lines and words –column height/width, leading, font and size. 2. To the four newspapers, they have individual layout’s ways to design dateline, headline, image, illustration and frame. The copy and caption look alike because of many similar structures. 3. From the text editor to the ART editor, layout is the final step. They don’t set format which are United Daily News, China Times, Liberty Times, but Apply Daily do. And the main article and text editor’s opinions are the influencing factors for layout’s designers. But the effects of readers’ preferences base on the investigative ways of the newspaper offices. 4. About layout’s feel of literary supplements (element), it is significant diversity for readers with different sexes and reading experiences. There are significant differences in layout’s preferences of literary supplements (structure) between different sexes, ages, educations, occupations, departments, reading experiences. And towards preferences of four supplements, readers have various opinions in the seven projects that are “collocation of headline, copy, illustration, image and frame”, “color combination”, “arranging in color and space”, “visual feel”, “knowledge, professional, and leisure imagery”.
